Nordic Energy Research

Nordic Energy Research supports energy research and innovation in the Nordic countries. It is a Nordic institution under the Nordic Council of Ministers – an intergovernmental body between Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Iceland.

Nordic Energy Research promotes knowledge creation and diffusion of new energy technologies and systems by fostering coordination, cooperation and competitiveness in the Nordic research and innovation area. It supports areas of energy research and innovation that are of common interest to Nordic stakeholders. A central activity in the 2011-2014 strategy for Nordic Energy Research is their main research call, Sustainable Energy Systems 2050. This programme has invested 100 million NOK in interdisciplinary research between:

  • Renewable energy
  • Grids & Markets
  • Low-carbon transport

Nordic Energy Research supports these areas by funding and coordinating research and innovation, managing transnational research programmes, and providing network building and advice.

Projects and networks are funded throughout the Nordic region, alongside direct grants and mobility support to researchers. Nordic Energy Research's funding has supported more than 300 Ph.D.s over the last 20 years.

Nordic Energy Research brings its considerable experience in managing transnational research cooperation to providing administrative support to EU projects under the ERA-NET umbrella, and to working groups under the Nordic Council of Ministers. The organisation facilitates network building by acting as a central hub for energy researchers and institutions in the Nordic region.
