Institute for Energy Technology - IFE

IFE is an international research institute for energy and nuclear technology. IFE’s mandate is to undertake research and development, on an ideal basis and for the benefit of society. The Institute strives for a more climate friendly energy system based on renewable and CO2-free energy sources.

The paramount goal of the Institute's energy research is to contribute to effective energy consumption, and to the development and introduction of new energy systems, processes and products in Norwegian industry. IFE’s vision is to establish a new industry based on Norwegian resources where CO2 is part of a value chain with zero emissions. In the future, non-polluting energy stations can replace today’s petrol stations. IFE has accomplished very promising results in industrial use and CO2 binding. Especially depositing CO2 in the mineral olivine, which combined with CO2 forms the commercial products silica and magnesite, as well as raw materials for the production of iron, nickel and chrome.

Many of Norway’s most promising development areas are situated along the shore at altitudes where the topography creates difficult, turbulent wind conditions. Wind in complex terrains is a discipline in which the institute has made its mark a great number of years. IFE is currently working on developing a new turbine technology especially designed for offshore wind parks in deep waters.
