Seaweed is an excellent source for ethanol production. The seaweed has an extreme growth rate within small areas with no need for fertilisers. Now the company Holmfjord located in Porsanger in Northern Norway plans a biofuel facility using seaweed as raw material.

Holmfjord will be cooperating with Norwegian research institutes SINTEF, NOFIMA, NIVA and Bioforsk Nord in this project.
