Norwegian companies to build wind farm off UK

220,000 homes will be supplied with clean energy from the offshore wind farm that is being established off the coast of UK by the end of 2011. StatoilHydro is operator for the development phase.

A diamond-shaped wind farm covering about 35 square kilometres will be the home of 88 offshore wind turbines off the coast north of Sheringham and Cromer, UK. The wind farm is being established by the Norwegian energy companies StatoilHydro and Statkraft.

High wind speeds, good access and grid connecion

Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm is to be built between 17 and 23 kilometres off the coastline. Still, on a clear day, you will be able to see the turbines on the horizon. The site was chosen because it lies within a government approved area for development. At the same time this area enjoys high wind speeds, it has the needed water depths and has relatively low levels of fishing activity. The companies responsible for establishing the wind farm also point out good access and grid connection options.

220,000 homes

When the wind farm is operational, it will generate about 1.1 TWh annually. The capacity is 315 MW. The power generated is equivalent to the annual energy consumption of 220,000 British homes. The climate benefit from this project is a CO2 emissions reduction at about 500,000 tonnes per year.

EU commitment

Offshore wind projects in the UK is part of a British EU commitment that targets an energy share of 20 percent from renewables by 2020.
