Nordic Ecolabelling

Nordic Ecolabelling has set a long-term climate objective of a significant reduction in emissions of greenhouse gases that may cause an increase in the temperature of the earth.

The Swan is the official Nordic ecolabel introduced by the Nordic Council of Ministers. It demonstrates that a product is a good environmental choice.

Criteria for ecolabeling products or services within the scheme of the Nordic Swan, are set to reduce negative environmental impact, to ensure sustainable use of raw materials and to minimise the amount of energy spent in production, transport and use.

Low, climate friendly energy consumption is secured for instance by:

  • Criteria set limits to the total amount of energy spent either in production or operation
  • Criteria specify an amount of energy that must come from renewable sources
  • Criteria reward recycling of energy, like for instance reuse of heat developed in construction
  • Criteria emphasise the need to make sure of a sustainable production and operation; thus ensuring as little energy as possible being spent extracting raw materials, manufacturing products and running operations

The Swan as a climate measure

  • Ecolabeling of services like hotels, grocery stores and printing companies is being done on based on criteriea including energy efficiency and renewable energy sources
  • Ecolabeling of small houses is being done based on criteria reducing energy consumption
  • Ecolabeling of windows is being done based is being done based on criteria securing minimal heat escape, at the same time making sure solar heat enters the building
  • Ecolabeling of tissue paper involves energy demands
  • Ecolabeling of copy and printing paper is based on criteria describing choice of energy source, recycled energy and CO2 emissions linked to energy consumption
