Norway: Carbon neutral by 2030

Norway aims at becoming carbon neutral within 2030. This will be achieved through numerous measures, including increased use of renewable energy, higher taxes on diesel and petrol, and tax exemptions for climate friendly vehicles.

With its steep mountains and a rainy coast, Norway covers almost all its electricity with hydropower. They have a great potential for wind power, and their silicon and solar panel industry and exports contribute to renewable energy generation in other countries.

Energy issues in Norway are controlled by the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy, while environmental and climate issues lie with the Ministry of the Environment. Energy research is funded through both ministries, and also by the Ministry of Education and Research.

With a virtually carbon-neutral electricity supply already, Norway aims at achieving a carbon-neutral economy by 2030. Building on competencies from the offshore drilling sector, Norway has had a greater RD&D focus on carbon capture and storage technologies than other Nordic countries.
