Statoil
Statoil is putting considerable effort into developing wind and wave power, bioenergy, hydrogen and other renewables. They aim to build a substantial business within sustainable and profitable biofuel production. In parallel, they wish to position for longer-term growth in low cost next-generation biofuel technology.
Onshore Wind
In 2002, Statoil started production at their first wind power park, Havøygavlen in Finnmark. At Utsira they are implementing a hydrogen and wind power project which was awarded the Platts Global Energy Award in 2004.
Floating Windmills
Off the island of Karmøy, Statoil will install the world’s first full-scale floating windmill with a capacity of 2.3 MW, the 100% Statoil owned Hywind concept. The pilot combines technology from both the Wind and Oil&Gas industry and draws upon expertise from Statoil’s longstanding offshore experience. Statoil also has a share in the technology company Sway that is developing floating wind turbines for use in deep water.
Wave and Tidal Energy
The Pelamis Wave Energy Converter is a system which generates renewable electricity from ocean waves. It was the world’s first commercial scale wave energy converter to deliver electricity to the grid and the first to be used in commercial wave farm projects. Statoil has invested in the Pelamis technology since 2002.
Statoil is the main shareholder in Hammerfest Strøm AS, a tidal energy technology company, and has brought significant sub-sea technological experience to the project. A fully operational 300kW prototype tidal turbine was installed in Norway in 2003.
