District heating supplies more than 60 % of Denmark’s homes with heat and covers 50 % of the country’s general demand. Rambøll's  services encompasses all stages of planning, design, operation, maintenance and management, and include technical, institutional, legal as well as economic aspects. In recent years, they have also actively engaged themselves in several district cooling projects. As cities aim to be carbon neutral, district heating and cooling systems become more important than ever. Their international market for these services is growing, not least due to growing concern with climate change.

C02 neutral heating in Frederiksværk

In 2002-03 Rambøll worked with city council to install a new wood-chip boiler plant that made the total heat supply of the city CO2 neutral. Early in the project, Rambøll prepared a feasibility study for the city council in which both the technical and the economic aspects of the project were compared to alternatives.
The report led to the only real logical conclusion - a new wood-chip boiler was both the most cost effective and efficient way to eliminate CO2 emissions from the heating of all buildings in the town. Ramboll took responsibility for the detailed design of the new boiler installations, and then followed through with procurement, construction management and commissioning. The boiler was installed in an existing boiler house, joining another biomass fuelled boiler. And Frederiksværk now has a CO2 neutral heating supply for all its public buildings.

District heating in the Copenhagen region

Rambøll has provided various services to the transmission companies and most of the distribution companies. Their assistance to the first companies began more than 45 years ago and today most of the companies are among Rambøll's clients. Rambøll is currently assisting in planning the extension of the district heating system in Copenhagen, encouraged by the environmental benefits, the profitability for the Danish society and the CO2 emission reductions.
The integrated project is one of the largest projects implementing the national energy policy and it is developed in combination with the implementation of a natural gas infrastructure in accordance with the heat supply act from 1979.

Ramboll’s services comprise:

  • Least-cost heat planning of DH and natural gas for councils
  • Strategic planning and project proposals
  • Feasibility studies
  • Stationary/transient hydraulic analysis
  • Detailed design, procurement, supervision, construction management and commissioning of all technical components in the system
  • Operation and maintenance support
  • Management consultancy
  • Overall design of waste incineration plants (Energy-from-Waste)
