Drilling deep for heat

Drilling expertise from the North Sea will help Rock Energy AS bring renewable energy from the ground.

Rock Energy AS is a Norway based company with an ambition to become a leading international geothermal company with competencies in the full geothermal value chain. The company has a patented technology for the exploitation of deep geothermal energy from Hot Dry Rocks for generating electricity, heating and cooling, and they have a significant global potential due to a less site dependent technology than conventional Hot Dry Rock technologies.

What makes Rock Energy AS unique?

  • Geothermal Hot Dry Rock technology secure inter-well connectivity between supply and return wells at 3,000 – 6,000m depth. Drilling parallel tubes creates a sub-surface heat exchanger between the supply and return well that allows water to flow freely at commercial rates in a closed loop.
  • State of the art drilling equipment and expertise on directional drilling from the oil- and gas industry in the North Sea to drill the pattern in the basement rock.
  • Installed capacity from 2MWth

On October 7 2009, Enova, the public office for the promotion of efficient energy use and production of new renewable sources of energy, granted Rock Energy AS € 3,4 million for developing their technology.
