Testing the windmills of tomorrow
The Danish government has decided to construct a new national test center for on and off-shore windmills. The size of the center will be around 7400 acres, and give room for 5 – 7 windmills raging up to 250 meters in height.

The site will provide the windmill industry with the test facilities necessary to maintain Denmark’s leading position in the industry.
- We want more sustainable energy in Denmark, and wish to sustain our leading position in the windmill market. Danish Minister for the Environment Troels Lund Poulsen said in a recent press release.
He continues to say that it is of national interest that the Danish windmill industry is offered good possibilities to test and develop their technology, and that Denmark is one step closer to making Denmark a greener nation.
- A nation driven by a strong green economy, with more green jobs and where we are known to the world for our high quality solutions to the environmental problems facing the globe.
The test site will enable the industry to try out prototypes, and to test the off shore windmills of the future on dry ground. Off shore windmills can be as tall as 250 meters, have a wingspan of about 100 meters and weigh an incredible 500 tons. A windmill of this size needs an area on the ground of about 10000m2.
The new site will be placed in the municipality of Thisted.
