Finnish energy company Fortum and Metsähallitus, the state enterprise administering the vast areas of state owned wilderness in Finland, have made plans for a wind farm in Lapland. The wind farm will consist of 18 wind mills generating 100 – 120 GWh a year. According to Fortum the output from the plants will supply around 40 % of total electricity demand in the two municipalities Kittilä and Sodankylä.

Fortum has increased it’s focus on services aimed at the wind energy market. They now offer services that cover the entire process; from analysing wind conditions and environmental impacts, to servicing and supervising both the wind farms and the power grid. Earlier this year Fortum made a deal with Nordisk Vindkraft, a subsidiary of the RES-group, about servicing the largest on shore wind park in Sweden. The wind farm situated near the town of Havsnäs, consist of 48 wind mills generating 95MW, enough to power 50000 households.

Popular energy resource

According to a recent report wind power is the most popular energy resource among Finnish public. 90 % of Finns would want further investments in wind energy in September 2007. In April 2005 the value was 88 %. In the Pori area of Finland 97 % of people supported wind power according to Suomen Hyötytuuli Oy in 2000.
